एक गरीब व्यक्ति से लेकर एक बड़े से बड़े व्यक्ति तक उसकी इज्जत उसके लिए बहुत माईने रखती है. कहा भी गया की व्यक्ति को अपनी इज्जत बनाने में वर्षो लग जाते है और  गवाने में एक मिनट ही काफी है. समाज में प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को ये अधिकार है की वो अपनी मान प्रतिष्‍ठा, इज्जत, ख्याति और सामाजिक सम्मान को किसी भी तरह से ठेस पहुंचने से बचा सके और साथ ही अगर कोई व्यक्ति उसकी इज्जत और शोहरत के साथ खिलवाड़ करता है तो वह उसके खिलाफ न्यायालय में जा सकता है.किसी व्यक्ति, व्यापार, उत्पाद, समूह, सरकार, धर्म या राष्ट्र के प्रतिष्ठा को हानि पहुँचाने वाला असत्‍य कथन  मानहानि (Defamation) कहलाता है. अधिकांश न्याय प्रणालियों में मानहानि के विरुद्ध कानूनी कार्यवाही के प्रावधान हैं ताकि लोग विभिन्न प्रकार की मानहानियाँ तथा आधारहीन आलोचना अच्छी तरह सोच विचार ही करें.किसी भी व्यक्ति को बेइज्जत करना, समाज में उसको नीचा दिखाने की कोशिश करना, उस पर कोई झूठा आरोप लगाना, झूठा बेईमान कहना, उसे गाली देना इत्‍यादी मानहानि केस के अन्दर आते है और उसके लिए आरोप लगाने वाला व्यक्ति अपराधी की श्रेणी में आता है.भारतीय दंड संहिता की मानहानि की धारा  499 के अनुसार भारत के प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को अपना मान-सम्मान, शौहरत, यश इत्‍यादी को सुरक्षित रखने का अधिकार है. अगर कोई व्यक्ति धारा 499 के अंतर्गत दोषी पाया जाता है तो उसको दंड दिया जा सकता है.पत्रकारों को मानहानि के खिलाफ योग्य विशेषाधिकार दिया जाता है जिसका अर्थ है कि उन्हें मानहानि के मामले में तब तक शामिल नहीं किया जा सकता है जब तक उनके द्वारा किए गए बयान किसी को बदनाम करने के लिए उपयोग नहीं किये गए हो.निष्पक्ष टिप्पणी का अपवाद किसी को एक अपमानजनक प्रकृति के बयान देने की इजाजत देता है जब तक कि बयान देने वाला व्यक्ति वास्तविक टिप्पणी कर रहा हो. कोर्ट की अवमानना मामले में दोषी पाए गए प्रशांत भूषण को सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने एक रूपये की सजा दी है: न्यायपालिका के खिलाफ अपने दो ट्वीट को लेकर उन्‍हें न्यायालय की अवमानना का दोषी ठहराया गया है अगर वे यह  जुर्माना राशि 15 सितंबर तक जमा नहीं करते तो उन्‍हें तीन माह की जेल हो सकती है और वकालत से तीन साल तक प्रतिबंधित भी किया जा सकता है: 14 अगस्त को सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने प्रशांत भूषण को शीर्ष अदालत और भारत के मुख्य न्यायाधीश (CJI) एसए बोबडे की आलोचना करते हुए दो ट्वीट करने के लिए दोषी पाया था:फैसला सुनाते वक्त सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने टिप्पणी की कि फ्रीडम ऑफ स्पीच (अभिव्यक्ति की आजादी) पर अंकुश नहीं लगाया जा सकता है, मगर दूसरों के अधिकारों का सम्मान करने की आवश्यकता है:एक मशहूर कहावत है कि इंसान अपनी इज्जत बनाने में वर्षों लगा देता है लेकिन उसे गंवाने में एक पल ही काफी होता है: इस संसार में हरेक इंसान के लिए इज्जत, मान और प्रतिष्ठा बहुत ही मायने रखती है। देश संविधान के अंतर्गत हरेक इंसान को कुछ मौलिक अधिकार और दायित्व दिए गए हैं: उन्हीं अधिकारों में से एक मान और प्रतिष्ठा के साथ जीने का भी है लेकिन अगर कोई इंसान दूसरे के इस मौलिक अधिकार का हनन करने या उसे किसी भी माध्यम से छीनने की कोशिश करता है तो इसके तहत कानून में कुछ प्रवाधान भी दिए गए हैं: मानहानि मुकदमा  अक्सर टेलीविजन, अखबरों या बड़े-बड़े बिजनेसमैन और सेलिब्रिटी से सुनने वाला शब्द है कभी भी कोई ऐसा बयान जिसे किसी व्यक्ति संस्था जिसके खिलाफ वो बयान हो अगर उससे छवि खराब होती है तो मानहानि के तहत केस दर्ज होता है किसी पर झूठा आरोप लगाना और उसकी मान प्रतिष्ठा को चोट पहुंचाना मानहानि की श्रेणी में माना जाता है इसके पीछे के तर्क हैं कि व्यक्ति की प्रतिष्ठा को धन, संपत्ति का हिस्सा समझा गया है इसलिए अगर कोई व्यक्ति किसी को संपत्ति से वंचित करता है तो वो अपराध की श्रेणी में माना जाता है:
